World first autonomous dental implant robot was put into use in a operation on Saturday in Xi’an City, capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.
The robot was completely developed by China and adopted the ingenious mechanical space fusion positioning method, which can not only improve the accuracy of operation but integrate with 3D printing technology to achieve immediate repair of denture.
Before operation, patient needs to take a CT (computed tomography) scan to acquire all the data of the patient’s skull and jaw, and then the data are stored through a special marking system, so that the robot arm can identify the corresponding location precisely in the non-open space and finish the dental implant surgery.
During the operation, the robot arm got into the patient’s mouth following the pre-set motion path. After locating the exact position absent of tooth, the robot arm installed the implant into the cavity.
It took the robot less than an hour to install two implants into the patient’s cavities.
“The operation ran very smoothly. The biggest advantage of the robot is high precision with a error of 0.2 to 0.3 millimeters, which is much more precise than manual operation,” said Zhao Yimin, professor in the Fourth Military Medical University.
